Keeping Global Trade Moving at the Quayside

Harbour & Container

Port and container terminal cranes operate 24/7 at extreme cycle rates. WireCo delivers hoist ropes for ship-to-shore cranes, RTGs, and stacking cranes that maximize uptime and minimize unplanned rope changes in the world's busiest container ports.

Overview

Built for the Harshest  Environments

Container terminals and port operations run around the clock. The wire ropes on STS gantry cranes, RTG cranes, and mobile harbour cranes endure more bending cycles per year than almost any other lifting application — all in corrosive salt-air environments.

WireCo provides wire ropes specifically designed for port crane duty cycles — high-speed trolley travel, rapid acceleration and braking, and continuous loading and unloading of containers weighing up to 40 tonnes. Our ropes maximize crane uptime and minimize unplanned shutdowns.

With technical support from engineers experienced in port operations and inventory positioned near major shipping hubs, WireCo helps terminal operators keep their cranes moving.

Key Challenges in

Harbour & Container

The problems WireCo products are engineered to solve.

Ultra-High Cycle Rates

Container cranes may complete 500,000+ hoisting cycles per year, demanding ropes with extraordinary bending fatigue resistance.

Corrosive Marine Environment

Salt spray, humidity, and chemical exposure in ports accelerate wire corrosion and reduce rope service life.

Minimizing Downtime

Every hour of crane downtime costs terminal operators revenue. Rope changes must be predictable, fast, and planned around vessel schedules.

Fleet Standardization

Large terminal operators seek standardized rope specifications across crane fleets for simplified procurement and maintenance planning.

How WireCo Delivers Solutions

01

Purpose-Built Port Crane Ropes

CASAR Turboplast and Stratoplast ropes are engineered specifically for STS and RTG crane reeving systems. Compacted strands, plastic-infused cores, and optimized wire configurations deliver fatigue life that significantly exceeds standard wire rope constructions in port service.

02

Corrosion Protection Built In

Our port crane ropes use a combination of galvanized wires, compacted strand geometry that minimizes water intrusion, and polymer-filled cores that resist moisture migration. The result: consistent performance in marine environments where standard ropes degrade rapidly.

03

Scheduled Replacement, Not Emergency Shutdown

WireCo crane ropes exhibit predictable, gradual discard behavior — visible external wire breaks that progress at a known rate. This allows terminal operators to plan rope changes during scheduled maintenance windows rather than losing productivity to unplanned failures.
